McKay began his career as a head writer for the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL) for two seasons in the 1990s and is a co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade. He is a founder member of the improv comedy group Upright Citizens Brigade and a former performer at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic, where he was a part of The Family, which featured Matt Besser, Neil Flynn, and Ali Farahnakian, as well as Child’s Play Touring Theatre.
McKay tried out for Saturday Night Live as an on-screen performer but did not make the cut. However, the scripts he submitted landed him a job as a writer in 1995, and within a year, at the age of 27, he was promoted to chief writer, a post he kept until 2001. He directed and co-wrote the George W. Bush Broadway musical You’re Welcome America alongside Ferrell. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, a horror-action film, was produced by him.
McKay began work on the biographical black comedy Backseat, about former US Vice President Dick Cheney and his rise to power, in November 2016, though the title was later altered to Vice. Annapurna Pictures released the film in the United States on December 25, 2018, starring Christian Bale as Cheney. The project was picked up by Apple Studios in December 2021, and McKay is now scripting.
