John Altobelli went to Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, California. He later joined Golden West College and played college baseball for the Golden West Rustlers. Altobelli transferred to the University of Houston and finished his college baseball career with the Houston Cougars.
He graduated in 1987 from the University of Houston with a degree in physical education. Altobelli earned his master’s degree in education from Azusa Pacific University in 1988. After college, Altobelli played for one season in Minor League Baseball for the Miami Marlins of the Florida State League.
In 1987, Altobelli became an assistant coach on the UC Irvine Anteaters baseball team. He was hired to coach for Orange Coast College in 1992.
