Sörenstam was a gifted all-around athlete as a kid. She was a nationally rated junior tennis player, played association football (soccer) with Bro IK in her birthplace, and was such a talented skier that the Swedish national ski team’s coach advised the family relocate to northern Sweden so she could develop her skiing all year.
Her amateur career included a triumph at St Andrews in the St. Rule Trophy and a runner-up place in the Swedish national mother-daughter championship. She competed in the Espirito Santo Trophy in 1990 and 1992 as a member of the Swedish National Team, winning the solo competition in 1992. Sörenstam worked as a personal assistant in Sweden while waiting to start college.
Sörenstam began her professional career on the Ladies European Tour (LET), then known as the WPGET, in 1992 after missing out on an LPGA Tour card by one stroke at the last qualifying tournament.
