Annika Sörenstam Wikipedia

Sörenstam was a gifted all-around athlete as a kid. She was a nationally rated junior tennis player, played association football (soccer) with Bro IK in her birthplace, and was such a talented skier that the Swedish national ski team’s coach advised the family relocate to northern Sweden so she could develop her skiing all year.

Her amateur career included a triumph at St Andrews in the St. Rule Trophy and a runner-up place in the Swedish national mother-daughter championship. She competed in the Espirito Santo Trophy in 1990 and 1992 as a member of the Swedish National Team, winning the solo competition in 1992. Sörenstam worked as a personal assistant in Sweden while waiting to start college.

Sörenstam began her professional career on the Ladies European Tour (LET), then known as the WPGET, in 1992 after missing out on an LPGA Tour card by one stroke at the last qualifying tournament. In 1993, she was chosen to compete in three LPGA Tour events, finishing T38th, 4th, and T9th, earning over $47,000. On the Ladies European Tour, she finished second four times and was named Rookie of the Year in 1993.

She won non-exempt status for the 1994 season by tying for 28th place at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. Sörenstam’s first professional victory came at the ALPG Tour’s Holden Women’s Australian Open in 1994.

Sörenstam was the LPGA Rookie of the Year in the United States, with three top-10 finishes, including a tie for second at the Women’s British Open, and a Solheim Cup debut. Her breakthrough year was 1995, when she won the U.S. Women’s Open for the first time on the LPGA Tour. She was the first non-American to win the Vare Trophy and ended #1 on the Money List.

She became only the second player in NHL history to win Player of the Year and the Vare Trophy the same year she was named Rookie of the Year. She topped the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit after winning the 1995 Australian Ladies Masters and two more tournaments on the Ladies European Tour, making her the first woman to top both the European and LPGA Tour money lists.

At a press conference at the Sybase Classic on May 13, 2008, Sörenstam stated that she would “walk away” from competitive golf at the end of the 2008 season. That night, she threw out the first pitch at a baseball game between the Washington Nationals and the New York Mets at Shea Stadium in New York, and the next day, she read the Top Ten on David Letterman’s Late Show. Her most recent triumph came in a playoff at the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open, which was co-sponsored by the Ladies European Tour and the Ladies Asian Tour.

Her most recent LPGA Tour event was the season-ending ADT Championship in November, but she was unable to advance past the first round of the event’s unusual playoff structure. Her final LPGA participation came in 2008, when she captained Team International to victory at the Lexus Cup in Singapore. Her most recent professional competition was the Ladies European Tour’s Dubai Ladies Masters in December 2008, where she tied for 7th place.
