Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk was born in 1934 to an ethnic Ukrainian peasant family in the village of Velykyi Zhytyn. The village was part of Poland’s Second Polish Republic at the time. After the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939, when Kravchuk was a kid, it became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
During the 1930s, his father served in the Polish army, and afterward, he and his wife worked for the local Polish colonists. Kravchuk’s father died on the front lines during World War II.

Kravchuk joined the Ukrainian Communist Party in 1958 and progressed through the ranks of the party’s agitprop department. In 1989, he joined the Ukrainian Communist Party Bureau, and on July 23, 1990, he was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR, making him the republic’s nominal leader.
The Communist Party of Ukraine’s monopoly on power was broken on October 24, 1990, and Kravchuk became not only the titular but also the actual president of the republic.

Kravchuk had one great-granddaughter and two grandchildren. After leaving the Ukrainian government, Kravchuk lived in a state-owned dacha in Koncha-Zaspa until his death in 2022.
