Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is set to become the first incumbent returning to power after serving a full term. The BJP registered an emphatic win in Uttar Pradesh today and looks set to cross the 270 mark. The majority mark in the 403-member legislative assembly is 202. The ruling party is currently winning or leading in 274 seats, while the Samajwadi Party, whose leader Akhilesh Yadav attracted huge crowds at his campaign rallies, is trailing behind with leads in 124 seats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Adityanath’s feat and suggested that the victory in Uttar Pradesh will pave the wave for the BJP’s win in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Lauding BJP workers for ensuring an early Holi by making the party victorious in four states, Modi said its vote share has increased in Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and Goa even though it was in power in the states. The party has also retained power in Uttarkhand.
This is the first time since 1985 that a ruling party has returned to power in Uttar Pradesh.
The UP polls are being seen are an indicator of the national mood ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Along with Uttar Pradesh, votes are being counted in four other states – Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand.

Uttar Pradesh results: BJP and its allieas ahead in 274 seats
The BJP is winning or leading in 256 seats, Apna Dal (Sonelal) and the NISHAD party, the two allies of the BJP, are winning or leading in 12 seats and six seats respectively.
The CPI(M) on Thursday said the BJP’s emphatic victory in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls is due to communal polarisation, control of sections of media and money power.
The BJP raced towards a second straight win in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh and dominated the score chart in three other states, while the Aam Aadmi Party announced its national presence with a landslide victory in Punjab.
The BJP along with its allies is leading in 274 seats in Uttar Pradesh, short of the 2017 tally of 312, but well past the majority mark of 202 in the 403-member assembly. The Samajwadi Party has done better than last time leading in 124 seats.

The BJP is looking at a 260-plus tally in 403-seat Uttar Pradesh, with the Samajwadi Party, its main challenger, a distant second, election results show. The party is ahead in 267 seats while the SP is likely to win in 131 seats.

The Election Commission today lifted the ban on victory processions during the counting of votes and declaration of results in the five states where elections were held recently.
In a statement, the poll panel said keeping in mind the current status of COVID-19 in these states, it has “decided to relax the guidelines on victory processions during and after the counting and has withdrawn the blanket ban on victory procession.”
With the BJP leaving its rivals comfortably behind in states like Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in the initial rounds of vote counting, its leaders credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance model for the expected win and said “new history” is being created in UP.
Party general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi asserted that people have expressed their faith in the policies ushered in by PM Modi.
