Angelo Sodano criticism and scandals
Critics have long claimed that Cardinal Sodano exploited his position of power, pointing to him as a driving factor behind the secrecy and wrongdoing that alienated many Catholics from Rome’s hierarchy under John Paul II’s presidency. Cardinal Sodano “embodies the misuse of power that has corrupted the church hierarchy more than any other,” observed Jason Berry, a reporter who investigated the church’s sexual abuse crises, in a New York Times guest column in 2013.
In an August 2018 letter, former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigan accused several Catholic bishops and cardinals of failing to act on complaints of sexual misconduct by former cardinal Theodore McCarrick. According to Vigan, his predecessors in the nuncio role attempted to warn the Holy See about McCarrick, but a series of secretaries of state, notably Sodano, sheltered McCarrick from sanctions.
The Legion of Christ listed 33 priests and 71 seminaries as sex abusing 175 children for decades on December 21, 2019, and alleged that Sodano was the one who led efforts to cover up reports of abuse while serving as Secretary of State. Sodano accused of attempting to strike a bargain in order to bury records exposing abuse. Sodano accused of concealing up one-third of the sex abuse cases involving known predator priest Marcial Maciel. Pope Francis accepted Sodano’s resignation as Dean of the College of Cardinals on the same day. His departure announced by the Holy See Press Office with no explanation.
