Carmen Miranda was a Portuguese-born Brazilian samba singer, dancer, Broadway actress, and cinema star who rose to prominence in the 1930s. Miranda is renowned as “The Brazilian Bombshell” for her characteristic fruit hat attire, which she donned in her American films.
She worked as a hat designer in a store as a young lady before making her debut recordings with composer Josué de Barros in 1929. Miranda’s 1930 performance of Joubert de Carvalho’s “Ta (Pra Você Gostar de Mim)” launched her to popularity in Brazil as the best interpreter of samba.

Miranda played on Brazilian radio throughout the 1930s and participated in five Brazilian chanchadas, films that celebrated Brazilian song, dancing, and carnival culture. Hello, Hello, Brazil! and Hello, Hello, Carnival! captured the essence of Miranda’s early films. The 1939 musical Banana da Terra (directed by Ruy Costa) introduced the world to her “Baiana” persona, which was influenced by Afro-Brazilians from the northeastern state of Bahia.
After watching Miranda at Cassino da Urca in Rio de Janeiro, Broadway producer Lee Shubert gave her an eight-week contract to play in The Streets of Paris in 1939. The next year, alongside Don Ameche and Betty Grable, she filmed her first Hollywood feature, Down Argentine Way, and her exotic clothes and Lusophone accent became her signature.
She was named the third-most popular person in the United States that year, and she and her band, Bando da Lua, were invited to sing and dance for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Miranda appeared in Busby Berkeley’s The Gang’s All Here in 1943, which included musical sequences with the fruit hats that were her hallmark.
Between 1940 and 1953, Miranda appeared in fourteen Hollywood films. Despite being praised as a gifted musician, her reputation had dwindled by the conclusion of World War II. She was the first Latin American celebrity to be asked to leave her hand and footprints in the courtyard of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in 1941, and she was the first South American to be recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Miranda is regarded as the forerunner of Brazil’s Tropicalismo cultural movement of the 1960s. In her honor, a museum was established in Rio de Janeiro, and she was the subject of the documentary Carmen Miranda: Bananas is My Business (1995).

She complained of feeling unwell before filming but managed to complete filming the show. After filming, she took some of her friends and cast members for a small party. She went upstairs and undressed and later lit a cigarate. She later collapsed and died from a heart attack.
