Bleszinski started his first game, “Palace of Deceit” when he was 15 years old. Its second version, written in Visual Basic, was released when he was 16 years old. He joined Epic Games in 1992 after submitting his game, Dare to Dream, to Tim Sweeney, the company’s CEO.
Despite the failure of Dare to Dream, he went on to work on Jazz Jackrabbit, a platformer co-developed with demoscene coder Arjan Brussee. The game, which was released in 1994, became Epic’s best-selling title at the time, allowing him to purchase his first apartment and car. Around the same time, he teamed together with Sweeney and James Schmalz on Unreal, which spawned a sequel, Unreal Tournament, and was developed into a series of titles.
He announced his retirement from Epic Games on October 3, 2012, after 20 years with the company, stating that he had been producing video games since he was a teenager and wanted to take a vacation.
He declared on Twitter on June 30, 2014, that he was “coming out of retirement to produce video games again” and that his next project would be revealed in the next week. The new game, code-named BlueStreak, would be a free-to-play, PC-focused arena shooter published by Nexon and developed by his own studio, Boss Key Productions, which he co-founded with Brussee the same year.
Bleszinski announced the closure of Boss Key Productions on May 14, 2018, blaming poor sales. Following the closing of Boss Key, Bleszinski has turned his attention to theater production. He co-produced and invested in Hadestown, and he hopes to do the same with a revival of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune.
