Cristie Kerr Wikipedia

Kerr’s first professional victory came in the Ironwood FUTURES Classic on the Futures Tour in April 1995, when she was still an amateur. After graduating from high school, she turned professional in 1996 at the age of 18, playing on the Futures Tour and the Players West Tour. She tied for sixth place at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in October 1996 to earn exempt status for 1997.

Her LPGA career began slowly; she entered the top fifty on the money list in her third season in 1999, but did not win until her sixth. In 2002, she won the Longs Drugs Challenge in California, which was her first LPGA event. In 2005, she won two tournaments and climbed to third place on the money list. She tied for second place in the US Women’s Open in 2000, and she repeated the feat in the 2006 Women’s British Open.

Her first victory of the year came at the Franklin American Mortgage Championship, where she shot a tournament-record 19-under-par score. She was the only American to win three LPGA Tour events in 2006, making her the only American to do it. Her first major championship was the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open, which she won. In 2002, 2003, and 2005, she was a part of the United States Solheim Cup team.

Kerr’s game is defined by her putting ability (she was in the top five on the LPGA Tour in putts/greens hit in 2005 and 2006) and her iron play. In 2005, she was ranked seventh in greens-in-regulation. Kerr finished in the top 10 in half of the tournaments she entered in 2005, and her score average was second only to Annika Sörenstam on the LPGA Tour.

Kerr won two of the first ten LPGA Tour tournaments in 2010, including the LPGA Championship, which she won by a record-breaking 12-stroke margin over Song-Hee Kim in second place. On June 28, 2010, she ascended to the top of the Women’s World Golf Rankings as a result of her performance.

Kerr won the CME Group Tour Championship in 2015 by one stroke over Gerina Piller of the United States and Jang Ha-na of South Korea. That year, she made 24 cuts out of 25 tournaments, won the Kia Classic for the 17th time in her career, and helped the United States win the Solheim Cup with a 3–0–1 record.

She finished in the top ten four times in 2016, including a tie for seventh place at the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship. She was also a member of the winning US team at the UL International Crown, where she had a 3–1–0 record. Kerr earned her 19th and 20th career victories in 2017, tying her for 26th all-time on the LPGA career wins list with Laura Davies.

Kerr and her caddie Matt Gelczis were wounded in a golf cart crash before the start of the second round of the Volunteers of America Classic at the Old American Golf Club in The Colony, Texas, on December 4, 2020. The two were taken to a local hospital’s emergency room and released later that day.

Kerr pulled out of the competition.  She detailed what happened after finishing the first round of the 2020 U.S. Women’s Open with a 71: Kerr and Gelczis collided with another cart after being blinded by its headlights, which Kerr’s cart lacked; she and Gelczis were using a flashlight to try to find their way to the driver.

Kerr landed on her chest with three dislocated ribs and bruising on her arms after being flung from the cart; she used pain medicine to get through the opening round at the U.S. Women’s Open. Gelczis’ injuries, according to Kerr, were significantly less serious, with simply a “bang on the head” and whiplash.

Cristie Kerr Injury

Kerr scored a 71 in the first round on Thursday, less than a week after the Old American Golf Club disaster. That night, the two-time major winner spent several hours in the hospital room with knee, arm, and hand contusions, while her caddie, Matt Gelczis, received a head knock and experienced whiplash.

Kerr paused to collect her thoughts after recalling the golf cart accident that nearly cost her the chance to compete in the 75th U.S. Women’s Open. Tears began to flow. Kerr was a touch confused on the circumstances of the mishap when she talked about it on Thursday after a strong round that had her well within striking distance of leader Amy Olson.
