Gangubai was born in a middle-class family of Kathiawad, Gujrat. Her family wants her to get a good education. But Ganga was never interested in studies. She always dreamt of becoming a famous actress like Hema Malini and Asha Parekh. She wanted to go to Mumbai and wants to make an acting career. At the age of 16, she fell in love with Ramnik who works for her father. The family was against their relationship. Both decided to run away from the house and get married.

 

As per the decision, they ran away from Kathiawad and went to Mumbai. At Mumbai, the couple stayed with each other for some days. On one morning, Ramnik told Gangu to stay with his aunt as he was going out to search a house for them. Ramnik’s aunt took her to the Kamathipura, a famous red light area of Mumbai. She came to know that Ramnik had sold her in 500 rupees. She was totally broken by this deceit. She tried much to get escape from there but could not make it possible.

 

She was badly tortured physically by Shukat Ali twice and even had to get admitted to a hospital. She was very angry over this behavior and decided to know about Shaukat Ali. She came to know that Shaukat Ali works for Karim Lala. She went to Kareem Lala’s house who was an underworld don. When Lala came to know about the brutality done with her, he assured them to take care of her. She tied a rakhi on her hand and make her a brother. When Shaukat Ali again came to Kamathipura, Karim Lala beat her badly and warned everyone to not misbehave with Gangu.

 

After it, she contested in local elections. She won the elections and people came to know her as Ganbubai Kothewali. She did many works for the rights of s*x workers in the red-light area. She also freed many girls who were forcefully sent to this business. She became a mother face for the s*x workers of Kamathipura.
