Grant Margolin Fyre Festival Scandal
Fyre Festival was a failed luxury music festival that was designed to promote the company’s Fyre app for booking music talent. The festival was set to take place on the Bahamian island of Great Exuma on April 28–30 and May 5–7, 2017.
Margolin served as the Chief Marketing Officer for the Fyre Festival, a first-ever music festival founded by Billy McFarland and Ja Rule. Using social media influencers like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and others, the Fyre Festival was marketed as the “cultural experience of the decade,” with tickets costing thousands of dollars.
During the inaugural weekend of the Fyre Festival, the event encountered issues with security, food, lodging, medical services, and artist relations, resulting in the festival being postponed indefinitely and eventually canceled. Instead of the luxury villas and gourmet meals for which festival attendees had paid hundreds or thousands of dollars, they were given boxed plain cheese sandwiches and FEMA/UN tents to sleep in.
On July 24, 2018, McFarland, two companies he founded, a former senior executive, and a former contractor agreed to settle charges deriving from an extensive, multi-year offering fraud that raised at least $27.4 million from over 100 investors, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
McFarland admitted to the SEC’s allegations, agreed to a permanent director-and-officer bar, and agreed to pay $27.4 million in disgorgement. Grant H. Margolin, Daniel Simon, Fyre Media, and Magnises, Inc. all agreed to the terms of the settlement without admitting or denying the charges.
Margolin agreed to a seven-year director-and-officer ban and must pay a $35,000 penalty, while Simon agreed to a three-year ban and must pay over $15,000 in disgorgement and penalty. Court approval is required for the settlements.
