Some admirers have expressed their displeasure with the fake story, calling it irresponsible, disturbing, and damaging to the politician’s supporters.

In May 1996, 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl interviewed Madeleine Albright about years of US-led economic sanctions against Iraq.

Lesley Stahl enquired, “According to reports, half a million youngsters have died. That’s a lot more kids than killed in Hiroshima.

Is the price, after all, justified?” “We believe the cost is justified,” Albright responded.

Later, Albright slammed Stahl’s segment, calling it “amount to Iraqi propaganda” and claiming that her question was a bait-and-switch.

“I had fallen into a trap and uttered something I did not mean,” she said, regretting having come across as “cold-blooded and vicious.”

The failure of Albright to recast the issue was interpreted by critics of sanctions as confirmation of the statistic. The segment was nominated for an Emmy Award.

Albright provided another argument during the 1998 Iraq conflict, saying, “But, if we must use force, it will be because we are America, the indispensable nation.

We stand up and see further into the future than other countries, and we see the risk that exists here for all of us.”

Albright opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq, according to PolitiFact, but after the US was committed to the war, she declared that she would back the President.

She was the country’s first female secretary of state. Albright and her family arrived in the United States from Czechoslovakia in 1948.

In 1957, her father, ambassador Josef Korbel, relocated the family to Denver, Colorado, and she became a citizen of the United States.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College in 1959 and a doctorate from Columbia University in 1975, with a thesis on the Prague Spring.

She served as an adviser to Senator Edmund Muskie before joining the National Security Council to work under Zbigniew Brzezinski.
