She turned professional in 1983 and won the Safeco Classic in her first year. In 1984, her first full LPGA season, she won two major events and was named LPGA Rookie of the Year. On the LPGA Tour, she has won 31 tournaments, including seven majors and the career Grand Slam for women’s golf.
She is now ranked fifth on the LPGA career money list as of 2012. From 1983 through 2006, Inkster won a tournament 16 times out of 24 seasons, but she never finished first in the money list; her best finishes were second in 1999 and third in both 1986 and 2002.
Inkster represented the United States in the Solheim Cup in 1992, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011, winning a total of 18.5 points, making her the most successful American Solheim Cup player as of 2011. She competed in the 2007 Women’s World Cup of Golf with Pat Hurst, representing the United States.
In 1999, she was named Sportswoman of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation, and in 2000, she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. She was named one of the top-50 players and teachers on the LPGA during its 50th-anniversary celebrations in 2000.
Inkster was a member of the 2011 Solheim Cup team and served as an assistant captain. She was the oldest player and the first female assistant captain in the history of the Solheim Cup. Inkster had her first serious injury of her career in late 2011 at the age of 51, prompting surgery in January 2012 to address nerve and tendon damage in her right elbow. She was forced to sit out the 2012 season until late June due to surgery.
She is also a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and has won more Solheim Cup matches than any other American. By winning three majors in the 1980s, two in the 1990s, and two in the 2000s, Inkster is the first golfer in LPGA Tour history to win two majors in three successive decades. Inkster led the United States team to victory in the 2015 Solheim Cup. The US was down 10–6 on the last day, but staged a historic comeback to win by a score of 14.5–13.5. Inkster captained the United States team in the 2017 Solheim Cup, which the US won 16.5-11.5 at the Des Moines Golf & Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa.
