Sorrentino made his acting debut in Nanni Moretti’s 2006 film The Caiman (Il caimano), which was also exhibited at the London Film Festival. Il Divo, Sorrentino’s next film, is a dramatized biography of Giulio Andreotti, a controversial Italian politician.

The film, which received the Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival, reunites Sorrentino with The Consequences of Love actor Toni Servillo, who plays Andreotti. Sorrentino revealed in 2019 that he will direct Jennifer Lawrence as mafia informant Arlyne Brickman in Mob Girl.
