Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk was born in 1934 to an ethnic Ukrainian peasant family in the village of Velykyi Zhytyn. The village was part of Poland’s Second Polish Republic at the time. Kravchuk joined the Ukrainian Communist Party in 1958 and progressed through the ranks of the party’s agitprop department. In 1989, he joined the Ukrainian Communist Party Bureau, and on July 23, 1990, he was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR, making him the republic’s nominal leader.
The Communist Party of Ukraine’s monopoly on power was broken on October 24, 1990, and Kravchuk became not only the titular but also the actual president of the republic.
