Hurst had to choose between pursuing a college golf career, for which she was strongly sought by coaches, and turning professional in the fall of 2007, when she began her final year of high school. In November, she competed in and won the Futures Tour qualifying school. She declared in December that she will forego college and join the Futures Tour in 2008, while also finishing high school.
In 2008, she was also given sponsor exemptions to three LPGA Tour events, however she missed the cut in two of them and tied for 21st in the third.She competed full-time on the Futures Tour in 2008, winning five events and breaking the Tour’s single-season earnings record of $93,107. She was selected Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, and she was immediately granted full LPGA Tour membership for the 2009 season.
Her debut LPGA competition was the SBS Open at Turtle Bay in 2009, where she finished in a tie for 15th place and topped the field in driving distance. Hurst finished her inaugural year as the LPGA Tour’s driving distance leader, averaging 272.5 yards per drive.
Hurst had a great amateur career. She won the Florida Women’s State Golf Association Junior Girls’ Tournament in 2005, was named FWSGA Junior Player of the Year, and placed second in the Florida high school girls’ golf championship. She finished second at the U.S. Girls’ Junior in 2006 and tied for second at the FWSGA Junior Girls’ Championship in 2007. She also competed in the US Women’s Open in 2006, less than two weeks after turning 16.
In 2006-07, she was voted Florida Junior Player of the Year, and in 2007, she qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open for the second time. She earned berths on the 2007 U.S. PING Junior Solheim Cup Team and Canon Cup Team, representing the East Team, after winning three AJGA events in 2007. She was crowned the 2007 AJGA Player of the Year after finishing 2007 as the top-ranked amateur in the Polo Golf Rankings.
